Stay safe kids. Consensual cuffing only.
In light of Orlando, in light of Oakland, it can be scary to believe in the sacred safe space. It exists. And if for a while, not in a way that you can put your body in, it can manifest in your mind. Don’t abandon the safe space. Just move it. Change it. The safe space is important. The safe space remains important, even if you feel like it doesn’t to anyone else. Even if you feel like the holy ground has been snatched from under your feet too many times.
As I grew older, I was made aware of a new rage inside of me; I had begun to understand the inequity of the world around me and the hardships involved in being a woman of color. The way I took up space in the world (and how many people thought I didn’t deserve this space) made me feel uneasy. But the Maine held me when I couldn’t really hold myself. They talked about love and heartbreak, but studded every song with real drums and electric guitars. It was music that I could bash my head to, but also cry to, if necessary.
